University of Eastern Africa, Baraton
The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) is a private coeducational Seventh-day Adventist university located in Baraton, about 50 km from Eldoret Kenya. It offers degrees in graduate and undergraduate programs in the fields of Business, the Humanities, Agriculture, Technology, Health Sciences and Education. Baraton University, as it is popularly known, is run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and is part of its system of higher education. It is accredited by the Commission for Higher Education, Kenya Government, and was the first private university to receive a charter granted by the Republic of Kenya on March 28, 1991. The university is a member of the Inter-University Council for East Africa, The Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Association of African Universities.

Tuition
- No UEAB fee figures could be verified — contact info@ueab.ac.ke or +254 714 333 111. UEAB does provide financial aid and scholarships, so ask what you qualify for rather than assuming the published fee is what you pay. If you are a Seventh-day Adventist, ask about church sponsorship. As a private university UEAB accesses HELB loans only, not Universities Fund scholarships. BUDGET FOR ON-CAMPUS HOUSING AS A NEAR-CERTAINTY, not an option: the main campus is genuinely rural, roughly 50km from Eldoret, and there is little off-campus alternative — men's and women's dormitories are on site. Living costs in the area are otherwise low. One thing worth weighing against the cost: with 250 academic staff against 3,000-4,000 students, UEAB's staffing ratio of roughly 12-16:1 is among the most favourable in this directory, which is a real quality argument.
Admissions
- UEAB is SELECTIVE by Kenyan private university standards, admitting on past academic records and grades — more selective than Daystar or CUEA, less so than Strathmore.
- IF YOU HOLD A DIPLOMA OR ARE ALREADY WORKING, note two routes most institutions do not offer: UEAB awards ASSOCIATE DEGREES in Business Information Technology, Networks and Communication Systems, and Software Engineering — an American-style shorter qualification that is rare in Kenya — and it runs a REGISTERED NURSE TO BSc NURSING upgrading programme at both its Eldoret and Kisumu centres, so practising nurses can upgrade without leaving employment.
- IF APPLYING FOR NURSING: ask for written confirmation of Nursing Council of Kenya recognition, which determines whether you can register to practise.
- IF APPLYING FOR THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION: ask for written confirmation of Teachers Service Commission recognition.
- Application forms are published by level — Diploma and Certificate, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate — with a separate Postgraduate Evaluation form. Both online portals and downloadable forms are available.
