St. Augustine University of Tanzania
St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) is a private university in Mwanza, Tanzania. It was founded by the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania in 1998 as a secular, nonprofit, private institution. Before 1998, SAUT was called first Nyegezi Social Training Centre and then Nyegezi Social Training Institute. SAUT has over 10,000 students with an anticipated minimal rise each new academic year. The university attracts students from Tanzania and elsewhere, particularly Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, and recently Germany and other foreign nations. - No SAUT fee figures could be verified — contact sautmalimbe@saut.ac.tz or +255 28 2981 187, and ask whether fees differ between the Mwanza and Arusha sites, since their provision differs. A POINT WORTH CHECKING THAT COULD SAVE YOU A GREAT DEAL: unlike Kenya, where private university students are restricted to loans and shut out of government scholarships, Tanzania's HESLB criteria refer simply to admission to 'an accredited tertiary institution' WITHOUT distinguishing public from private. If that reading holds, SAUT students have the same loan access as public university students, which would substantially narrow the cost gap between them. Confirm it with HESLB directly. Given Catholic ownership, ask your diocese about sponsorship as well, particularly if you are entering church service. The TZS 20,000 annual TCU quality assurance fee applies. Mwanza living costs are below Dar es Salaam.
Admissions
- CHECK WHICH CENTRE TEACHES YOUR PROGRAMME BEFORE APPLYING. SAUT operates a distributed network and TCU's guidebook lists SAUT Mwanza and the SAUT Arusha Centre SEPARATELY — meaning the same university offers different programmes at different locations. Further centres are commonly cited beyond those two.
- Apply DIRECTLY to the university. DIRECT ENTRY: two ACSEE principal passes at E or above totalling 4.0 points. EQUIVALENT ENTRY via Ordinary Diploma or NTA Level 6 has its own annual TCU guidebook.
- If you are not Catholic, ask directly whether you would be admitted. Most Catholic universities in the region admit students of other faiths, but this was not confirmed at SAUT and should not be assumed.
- Accepts international applicants
