State University of Zanzibar
State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) is a public university located in Tunguu ward of Central District in South Region of Unguja Island in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The university was established by an act of House of Representatives of Zanzibar in 1999 and became operational in 2002.

Tuition
- No SUZA fee figures could be verified — contact vc@suza.ac.tz or +255 776 657 788. TWO THINGS SPECIFIC TO ZANZIBAR THAT COST OR COMPLICATE. First, IF YOU ARE ZANZIBARI, your birth and death certificates must be certified by the ZANZIBAR CIVIL STATUS REGISTRATION AGENCY (ZCSRA), not mainland RITA, for your HESLB application — using the wrong body is a common cause of rejection. Second, ask whether the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar operates its OWN student support scheme alongside or instead of HESLB; this was not established and could matter a great deal. MAINLAND STUDENTS should budget for ferry or flight travel to and from the islands, a real recurring cost no mainland institution imposes. Zanzibar living costs are pushed up by the tourism economy, particularly in Stone Town. The TZS 20,000 annual TCU quality assurance fee applies.
Admissions
- UNDERSTAND SUZA'S DUAL POSITION before applying. Zanzibar is semi-autonomous within the union and retains substantial authority over education, so SUZA operates under Zanzibar's authority while also appearing in TCU listings. Ask which framework governs your degree and how it is recognised on the mainland and abroad — this is the foundational question here and it has no equivalent at mainland institutions.
- Apply DIRECTLY to the university. DIRECT ENTRY: two ACSEE principal passes at E or above totalling 4.0 points.
- Zanzibari applicants: use ZCSRA rather than mainland RITA for document certification on HESLB applications.
- International applicants should verify BOTH union and Zanzibar immigration formalities — the islands operate their own in addition to union requirements.
