Maseno University
Maseno University is a public university based in the Maseno district of the Kisumu County, Kenya, along the Equator. It was fully fledged as a university in 2001, after being a constituent college of Moi University for a decade. It has over 10,000 students pursuing programmes offered in the university campuses and it is currently ranked among the best universities in Kenya.

Tuition
- Maseno publishes tuition at PROGRAMME level, which is better granularity than most Kenyan universities offer. Indicative annual figures: History and Archaeology and Literature at about KSh 122,000 — the cheapest recorded in this directory; Criminology about KSh 153,000; all four business degrees priced identically at about KSh 184,000; Music about KSh 204,000, notably higher than other arts subjects, presumably reflecting instrument and studio costs. The overall published range is roughly KSh 122,000-306,000 a year, meaningfully lower and narrower than the University of Nairobi's KSh 144,000-600,000. As a public university Maseno students access both Universities Fund scholarships and HELB loans — Maseno states explicitly that admitted students can apply for government funding through HEF and HELB. Kenya's funding framework is under active litigation and reform, so treat all figures as dated August 2026. Western Kenya living costs sit well below Nairobi. Fees are paid via M-Pesa through the eCitizen paybill 222222. KENYAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITY FUNDING: government-sponsored students placed through KUCCPS pay around KES 16,000 a year; the figures shown here are the SELF-SPONSORED rate. That placement decision is close to a tenfold difference and is made by KUCCPS central placement, not by the university. Funding runs through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) model and HELB loans at hef.co.ke. WHO IT SUITS: western-region applicants wanting strong education, computing and health sciences. Admissions
- The national minimum for degree entry is a KCSE mean grade of C+, with programme-specific cluster requirements published by KUCCPS each cycle.
- All Maseno degree courses are KUCCPS-accredited; placement is done by KUCCPS, and admitted students then apply for government funding through HEF and HELB.
- One thing to ask about before you enrol: nearly every Maseno undergraduate degree is titled 'With IT'. Establish what that IT component actually comprises in credit or module terms, because it is the university's main selling point and its substance is not published.
