Port Elizabeth Technikon was established as a technikon in 1979, having previously operated as the College for Advanced Technical Education. In 2005, it merged with the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University to form the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (now Nelson Mandela University). The institution was known for its career-oriented programs, particularly in engineering, science, and the arts.
