Established in 2009 at the inception of Kwara State University, the department was originally named the Department of Language and Linguistics. Over the years, it underwent several restructurings, including being named the Department of Linguistics, African, and European Languages. In April 2025, the university Senate approved its splitting into the Department of English and the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs focusing on language, literature, and linguistics.
